Four Tips to Reduce Stress
How do we prepare for another season of this inexorable time in the world? As the leaves take on the colors of autumn and Starbucks vends the most highly-anticipated beverage of the year, our minds will be occupied by the much broader circumstances at hand.
Schools are back in session, and many are going back to work. And as if that wasn’t enough, we are constantly being reminded by mass media that we are swimming in uncharted waters. It is inevitable that stress and anxiety will invade your headspace in a big way these next few months. But we’ve compiled some of the most reliable ways to say “au revoir” to your worries and to enjoy some much-deserved rest and relaxation.
Pamper Yourself
If you didn’t get to enjoy your Four Seasons spa day this summer, you have everything you need to create a makeshift spa in the comfort of your own bathtub. Light your favorite autumnal candle (we strongly suggest White Barn’s cinnamon spiced vanilla) and grab a glass of wine. Harper + Ari’s exfoliating sugar cubes will leave you with unbelievable silky skin, and you can never go wrong with a good book. If it hasn’t already graced your reading list, add Rupi Kaur’s sophomore poetry collection “The Sun and Her Flowers,” and you won’t regret it. If you’re extra like us, you can even add a few rose petals into the water.
Calm your Body and Mind
There are several different practices which utilize deep breathing and meditation to promote relaxation. Some of these include yoga and tai chi. Although the intentions of these practices are vastly different, they both provide a way for the body to be at ease. Yoga focuses on the stillness of the body and the mind. Whereas, tai chi teaches evolving movements and postures. Whatever it may be, try and find an outlet for your body to relax and unwind this fall, and we promise you’ll be sleeping more sweetly at night.
Embrace the Outdoors
Although the temptation in this time is to stay indoors and be bound to technology, it is healthy to indulge in some time in nature every once and a while. Whether it be walking your dogs or picnicking on the beach, take some opportunities to enjoy nature’s stunning sights and fresh air. The good thing about nature is that it is always there—ready and willing to embrace you.
Be Aware of your Diet
While we don’t suggest completely transforming your diet, it is important to be aware of what you let into your body. In this time, it is essential to emphasize protein-rich and vitamin-rich foods and to avoid caffeine and carbohydrates. Integrating protein and essential vitamins, such as A and B, into your diet will leave you feeling refreshed and energized. Carbs tend to leave you with momentary lapses of energy, and caffeine will amplify many unnecessary worries and anxieties throughout the day.
We can’t promise that our tips will instantly inspire you to take on the world, but over time, these practices can work wonders in your life. Times are most definitely tough right now, but you can choose to be a positive force in your own life. When worst comes to worst, put those rose-colored glasses on and carry on.
